Both the Chargers and Raiders have diehard fans who love to watch their teams destroy their opponents. Every win in the Kansas City Chiefs-controlled AFC West is precious, which makes both the Chargers and Raiders competitions that much more important. The Chargers and the Raiders have both had their ups and downs throughout their rivalry; the Chargers won the first six games against the Raiders between 1960–1962, then the Raiders took control, going 30-7-2 against the Chargers between 1966–1985. Las Vegas Raiders vs. Los Angeles Chargers History
The Las Vegas Raiders vs. Los Angeles Chargers rivalry is a longstanding and historic one. This rivalry has seen both teams compete in two leagues, as well as a number of team relocations. The rivalry started in 1960 when both the Raiders and Chargers were charter members of the American Football League (AFL). Both teams were then placed in the NFL’s AFC West Division during the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
Formed in Los Angeles in 1960, the Raiders relocated to Oakland and played there from 1961 to 1982. They then moved back to Los Angeles from 1982–1994, before going back to Oakland from 1995–2019 until finally landing in Las Vegas in 2020. On the other hand, the Chargers were originally located in Los Angeles in 1960 until they moved to San Diego from 1961–2016 and finally ended up back to Los Angeles for the 2017 season, where they remain today.
Staying in the AFC West the entire time meant these two teams played against each other at least two times a season. The constant matchups, as well as the geographical differences of Northern and Southern California, led to the intense rivalry shared between these two opponents. Going into the 2023 season and over their more than 60 years in the league, these two teams have a total record of 68-57-2 in favor of the Raiders.
The Raiders and Chargers have only met once in the NFL Playoffs: during the 1980 AFC Championship game, which the Raiders won 34-27. Another notable moment between these two teams included the controversial “Holy Roller” event in which a fumblerooski play ended the game with a Raiders touchdown and win, knocking the Chargers out of the NFL Playoffs and leading to an NFL rule change. To keep the rivalry intact, the final game of the 2022 season was one of the most intense in NFL history for these teams. The Chargers made a late fourth quarter comeback to push the game into overtime. As the clock was winding down in overtime—and a tie meant both teams would enter the NFL Playoffs—the Chargers made a controversial timeout while the Raiders had the ball, which eventually led to a breakout run by Raiders running back Josh Jacobs and a field goal by the Raiders to secure a win and knock the Chargers out of the NFL Playoffs.
Although now located in different states, the Las Vegas Raiders vs. Los Angeles Chargers rivalry remains as competitive as ever.
