Cincinnati Bengals vs. Kansas City Chiefs History
The Bengals and Chiefs rivalry is a new one in the NFL. Unlike many NFL rivalries, the Bengals and the Chiefs are in different divisions; the Bengals are in the AFC North and the Chiefs in the AFC West. This bitter competition comes from the extremely close AFC Championship games in 2021 and 2022. The rivalry began during the 2021 season when the Bengals, led by star quarterback Joe Burrow, upset the Chiefs in week 17 of the regular season 34-31. The Bengals and Chiefs then met in the AFC Championship a few weeks later. During that game, the Bengals again upset the dominant Chiefs and their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, at the Chiefs home stadium in overtime 27-24 to advance to Superbowl LVI. The Bengals vs. Chiefs rematch at the end of the 2022 regular season was a highly anticipated game. The Bengals again defeated the Chiefs 27-24, setting the stage for an action-packed 2022 AFC Championship game.
Prior to their second AFC Championship game, tensions began to rise as insults between the two teams and cities started to flow. At this point, Joe Burrow was 3-0 against Mahomes and the Chiefs as the Bengals headed to Arrowhead for their second consecutive AFC Championship game. Unfortunately for Burrow and the Bengals, the Chiefs defeated the Bengals 23-20 during that game. Amazingly, this made the fourth consecutive game where it was decided upon by exactly three points. The Chiefs went on to win Superbowl LVII.
With an overall record of 18-15 favoring the Bengals, the stage is set for another competitive matchup between these two NFL juggernauts.
