Are the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders Rivals?

Yes, since both teams are in the NFC East, the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders are heated rivals within the NFL. As members of the same division, the Cowboys and the Commanders play each other twice a season, at each team’s home field. The team with the best divisional record among the Cowboys, Commanders, New York Giants, and Philadelphia Eagles gets an automatic berth into the NFL Playoffs, adding more fuel to the rivalry.

Who are the Dallas Cowboys’ Biggest Rivals?

The Dallas Cowboys are commonly referred to as “America’s Team.” As perhaps the most distinguished franchise in the NFL, they’ve got one of the largest fanbases in the country, which means they’ve also developed a number of rivals. The Cowboys have a rivalry with all three NFC East teams: the Washington Commanders, the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys also have rivalries with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers, three of the other most decorated franchises in football. Finally, the Cowboys also have a rivalry with the Los Angeles Rams.

Who are the Washington Commanders’ Biggest Rivals?

Despite being the team housed in our Nation’s Capital, the Washington Commanders do not have a decorated history within the NFL, and therefore do not have as many rivalries as other teams within the NFL. All three of the Commanders’ biggest rivals are housed within the NFC East: the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Commanders History

Both ESPN and Sports Illustrated magazine called the rivalry between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders its top NFL rivalry of all time. The two franchises met for the first time in October 1960 when Washington bested Dallas 26–14. Between 1960 and 2022, they have faced off 126 times total, with the Cowboys holding the head-to-head edge 76–48–2. However, Washington holds the postseason head-to-head edge, 2–0, with wins coming in 1972 and 1983.

Since 1961, Washington and Dallas have played each other twice a year, giving plenty of opportunities for fuel to be added to the rivalry fire. Over the next decade, the Cowboys would win 10 of the first 19 matchups, with seven losses and two ties. Animosity between the two teams has not just been reserved for players and coaches, though, as even both franchise owners, Jerry Jones for Dallas and Daniel Snyder for Washington, have taken swipes in the media at one another. The Cowboys saw their longest sustained success against Washington take place from 2000–2019, where they went 28–12 over the 20-year stretch. However, from 2020-2023, the two teams have split each of the six matchups with Washington getting the best of Dallas at the end of the 2022 season, 26–6.

Where Do the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders Play?

AT&T Stadium, located just outside of Dallas in Arlington, Texas, is home to the Dallas Cowboys and is commonly known as “Jerry World” after the team’s owner, Jerry Jones. The stadium is renowned as one of the world’s most luxurious and expensive, with a construction cost of $1.3 billion when it opened in May 2009. Its impressive facilities have made it a popular venue for a variety of sporting events, including the NBA All-Star Weekend in 2010 and the College Football Playoff National Championship in 2015. Additionally, it has been selected to host games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Conversely, the home of the Washington Commanders is FedExField, one of the oldest active stadiums in the National Football League. Opened in September 1997, FedExField cost only $250 million to construct, yet still has a 67,617 capacity. The stadium was also one of the stadiums selected to host the 1999 Women’s World Cup.
