Dallas Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers History
Because the Cowboys and 49ers do not play in the same division within the NFC, their interdivisional rivalry means they play once every three years in the regular season per the NFL’s rotating schedule. Through the 2023–2024 regular season, though, the Cowboys and 49ers have played 41 times total, with San Fran leading 21–19–1. In the postseason, however, the Cowboys hold a narrow edge, winning five times in nine contests.
The 49ers have had their success too, however, winning the most recent matchup — the 2023 Division Playoff game — 19–12. San Francisco has won the last four meetings between both teams.
The rivalry between the Cowboys and 49ers dates all the way back to 1960, when the two teams played on November 20, a game the 49ers won 26–14. The Cowboys would go on to exact their revenge on the 49ers, stacking playoff wins in 1970,1971 and 1972 over the 49ers: two games were in the NFC Championship and one in the Divisional Round.
The two franchises met again in the 1981 NFC Championship game in San Francisco, one of the most famous games in NFL history where Dwight Clark caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Joe Montana to eliminate the Cowboys. The play is now commonly referred to by NFL fans as “The Catch.”
The flames of the rivalry were stoked again between 1992–1994 when the Cowboys and 49ers played each other in three consecutive NFC Championship games, where the winner would ultimately go on to claim the Super Bowl title. Dallas got the best of San Francisco in 1992 and 1993, but the 49ers got revenge in 1994.
Where Do the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers Play?
Referred to as “Jerry World”, after its owner Jerry Jones, the home of the Dallas Cowboys is AT&T Stadium. Situated in Arlington, Texas, just outside of Dallas, AT&T Stadium is one of the most luxurious and costly stadiums in the world. Built in May 2009, it cost a staggering $1.3 billion to construct. In addition to serving as the home of the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium has hosted a variety of sporting events, such as the 2010 NBA All-Star Weekend and the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship, and is set to host games during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers play at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, roughly 40 miles from downtown San Francisco. Construction on Levi’s Stadium broke ground in April 2012 and was completed roughly two years later in July 2014, costing an estimated $1.3 billion. When the 49ers were looking for a new stadium, proposals were originally submitted to tear down and rebuild on the site of Candlestick Park in downtown San Francisco; however, negotiations fell through in 2006 and the franchise was forced to pick a site further south. Levi’s Stadium has played host to several events across sports, including the Pac-12 Football Championship Game from 2014–2019, the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship, and Super Bowl 50 in 2016. The stadium has also been slated to host games during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
