The rivalry started in 1960 when both the Raiders and Chargers were charter members of the American Football League (AFL). Both teams were then placed in the NFL’s AFC West Division during the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1960, the Raiders relocated to Oakland and played there from 1961 to 1982. They then moved back to Los Angeles from 1982–1994, before going back to Oakland from 1995–2019 until finally landing in Las Vegas in 2020.
