Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers History

The legacy of the rivalry between the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos dates back to the establishment of the American Football league in 1960. Sharing the same conference ever since, the two teams play each other twice a year, and the games are often closely contested.

The first decade of their rivalry saw the Chargers dominate 15-5 through 1969. The ’70s, however, were a different story, as the Broncos won or tied every home game and narrowed the all-time series to 21-18-1, still narrowly favoring the Chargers.

In the 1980s, the rivalry between the Broncos and Chargers intensified as both teams became contenders in the AFC. One of the most memorable games — in arguably the most intense decade of the rivalry — came in 1985 when the Broncos blocked a game-winning field goal attempt by the Chargers in overtime, running the ball back for a game-winning touchdown of their own. Later that year, the Charges got revenge at home, beating the Broncos 30-10 in spectacular fashion in their final matchup of the season.

In recent years, the rivalry between the Broncos and Chargers has continued to be fiercely competitive. In 2010 the Chargers swept the Broncos in the regular season. The following years would see the Broncos granted a playoff spot over the Chargers due to tiebreakers, and an insane come-from-behind victory for the Broncos at the hands of quarterback Peyton Manning in 2012. The two would meet for the first and only time in the playoffs in 2013 — a contest the Broncos would go on to win. The rivalry has seen a resurgence in the 2020s as the teams share an even split, 3-3 in their first six games of the decade. Both teams have had success in the AFC West, and their games are always highly anticipated by fans.

Where Do the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers Play?

The Denver Broncos play at Empower Field at Mile High, located on the premises of Colorado’s original and iconic Mile High Stadium. A short distance from downtown Denver, Empower Field is located at 5,280 feet above sea level, granting the Denver Broncos one of the most significant homefield advantages in the NFL. With a seating capacity of 76,125, Empower Field is also host to the Colorado Rapids soccer team and Denver Outlaws lacrosse team. Empower Field, like Mile High Stadium before it, is considered one of the most iconic venues in American sports. It is utilized as a concert venue and was even used for Barack Obama’s acceptance of the democratic presidential nomination in 2008.

Located three miles from Los Angeles International Airport, SoFi Stadium has a seating capacity of 70,240 and is host to both Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams. One of only two stadiums to host two NFL teams, SoFi Stadium is a fixed roof facility that was built in 2020 on the old site of the Hollywood Park Racetrack. The stadium hosts the annual LA Bowl in college football and professional soccer matches for various leagues. SoFi Stadium has also served as a venue to some of the biggest names in music, including Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
