The Rivalry between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals started when the Ravens entered the NFL in 1996. Since 1996, both the Bengals and the Ravens have been in the same division, leading the teams to play each other twice a season. Starting the series off with a bang, the first game between the Ravens and the Bengals was a legendary one, with the Bengals overcoming a 21–3 deficit at half time to score 21 unanswered points to win the 1996 matchup 24–21. Since this first game, the Ravens and Bengals are about as even as any rivalry can be, with a record of 32–27 favoring the Ravens. Even though the Ravens have the winning record in the rivalry, the Bengals won the most important game to date, with a 24–17 win over the Ravens in the first NFL Playoff game between these teams in the 2022 NFL Wild Card Round.
Over the previous 26 years, this series has seen a number of memorable moments that have fueled the rivalry. In 2004 the Bengals came back from being down 17 points to defeat the Ravens 27–26. Another notable moment was in 2007 when Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson (Ochocinco) caught the first touchdown pass of the game, then pulled out and put on a yellow/gold jacket with “Future H.O.F 20??” written on the back. There was also the memorable end-of-regulation play in 2013 when Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton threw a Hail Mary pass on the last play of the game to Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green to put the game into overtime. The play was legendary, but the Ravens did end up defeating the Bengals in overtime 20–17. Another rivalry-sparking game happened in 2017 when the Bengals, who were already out of the playoffs, defeated the Ravens in week 17 to prevent the Ravens from making the playoffs.
In recent years, these two power offensive teams have made headlines with their young star quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson of the Ravens and Joe Burrow of the Bengals. Both quarterbacks are only in their mid-20s and many fans see them as the future of the NFL.
