The rivalry between the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees had its beginnings when the Houston Astros were moved to the American League in 2013. Since then, the Astros have won all four postseason series played between the two teams, starting with a 3-0 victory at the 2015 American League Wild Card Game. While they quickly stirred up competition, the Astros’ rivalry with the Yankees truly began in 2017 during the seven-game American League Championship Series.
After beating the Yankees again in the 2019 American League Championship Series, the Astros were embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal with evidence of cheating from the 2017 season. Many Yankees fans blamed their defeat in the 2017 series on the cheating that had occurred.
In 2022, the rivalry soared to new heights. General Manager for the New York Yankees Brian Cashman cast aspersions on the Houston Astros in response to complaints about the Yankees’ World Series drought since 2009. “Well, I think we actually did it the right way,” he told The Athletic. “The only thing that derailed us was a cheating circumstance that threw us off.”
Following New York’s victory over the Cleveland Guardians in the 2022 American League Division Series, videos of Yankee fans chanting “we want Houston” started making the rounds. Sure enough, the Astros met the Yankees in the 2022 American League Championship Series, where the Astros swept, 4-0.
The Astros hold the distinction as the only team to defeat the Yankees in four playoff series, as well as the only team to notch two no-hitters against New York, in 2003 and in 2022.
