Mets vs. Phillies: a Look Back at This NL East Rivalry

New York Mets tickets and Philadelphia Phillies tickets can be found on their respective team pages.
Yes, the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies have a heated rivalry called “The Battle of the Broads” that is rooted in their mutual pursuit to capture the title of National League East Champions. The winner of the National League East gets an automatic berth into the Major League Baseball Playoffs.
The Mets’ biggest rivals are their fellow NL East opponents: the Philadelphia Phillies, the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals. The Mets also have a notable rivalry against the New York Yankees, a series that is dubbed the “Subway Series.”
The Philadelphia Phillies are fierce competitors and rivals with several divisional foes in the NL East; namely the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves. They also have a rivalry with in-state foes and NL Central opponent, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Phillies and Mets have a matchup history that dates back all the way to 1962. Between then and 2022, the two teams have played competitively in 1,048 games, with the Phillies holding a narrow margin in the victory column, 540–508. Both teams hold a tie for the longest win streak in the series, each winning 10 in a row.
The height of the rivalry took place in the 2000s, with both the Mets and Phillies vying for division titles and National League pennants. Between 2006 and 2015, the Mets won two NL East crowns and the Phillies won five in a row, including the World Series in 2008.
Although there were no notable brawls between the two teams during that time, there were several incidents that sent waves through the presses. In 2007, Phillies superstar Jimmy Rollins said his squad was the team to beat “on paper” to much chagrin when they started the season 11–24. But with momentum in the second half of the season, and dominating performances against the Mets that saw three season sweeps, the Phillies won the division and Rollins won the NL MVP.
A year later, Mets star Carlos Beltrán made a similar prediction during Spring Training for his squad, jesting the Phillies in the process. After a hard fought season, the Mets lost the division series lead in September and would not gain it back. It marked two consecutive years where the Mets were eliminated from playoff contention on the final day of the season.
The New York Mets play at Citi Field located in Corona Park in the heart of New York City. The stadium was opened in 2009 and replaced the previous park, Shea Stadium, which opened in 1964. The first game played in Citi Field was actually a collegiate contest between St. Johns and Georgetown, where the Hoyas won 6-4 in front of 22,397 fans.
The Philadelphia Phillies play at Citizens Bank Park located in South Philadelphia’s Sports Complex. Citizens Bank Park has been the home of the Phillies since 2004. The Phillies lost their opening game 4–1 to the Cincinnati Reds.
