New York Mets vs. New York Yankees Subway Series History

The Mets and Yankees have a relatively short playing history against one another due to Major League Baseball’s lack of interleague play until 1997. The two squads first squared off in June 1997, when the Mets beat the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, 6-0. Since 1997, the met a total of 157 times, with the Yankees edging out the series lead, 87–70.

In the postseason, the Yankees and Mets collided for the first and only Subway World Series in 2000, when the Yankees, led by Derek Jeter, Dwight Gooden and Roger Clemens, powered past the Mets 4-1 to capture the title.

Controversy struck during that series at the conclusion of Game Two when Clemens and Mets catcher Mike Piazza had an altercation. Earlier in the season, Clemens hit Piazza with a pitch that landed Piazza on the Disabled List with a concussion. In Game Two, Piazza splintered a bat on a foul ball, with a portion going over the pitcher’s head. Clemens grabbed a large piece of the bat and hurled it towards the baseline and dugout, nearly hitting Piazza and spurning a benches-clearing brawl. The Yankees won the game, 6-5, but the Mets bounced back in Game Three for their only win of the series.

The Mets and Yankees rivalry carried into the regular season schedule for Major League Baseball’s inaugural Rivalry Weekend in 2025. The second MLB Rivalry Weekend booked a rematch between the two New York teams from May 15 to 17, 2026. The 2026 MLB season also scheduled a Subway Series matchup at Yankee Stadium from September 11 to September 13, 2026 to honor the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.
