New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies Series History
The Phillies and Mets have a matchup history that dates back all the way to 1962. Between then and 2022, the two teams have played competitively in 1,048 games, with the Phillies holding a narrow margin in the victory column, 540–508. Both teams hold a tie for the longest win streak in the series, each winning 10 in a row.
The height of the rivalry took place in the 2000s, with both the Mets and Phillies vying for division titles and National League pennants. Between 2006 and 2015, the Mets won two NL East crowns and the Phillies won five in a row, including the World Series in 2008.
Although there were no notable brawls between the two teams during that time, there were several incidents that sent waves through the presses. In 2007, Phillies superstar Jimmy Rollins said his squad was the team to beat “on paper” to much chagrin when they started the season 11–24. But with momentum in the second half of the season, and dominating performances against the Mets that saw three season sweeps, the Phillies won the division and Rollins won the NL MVP.
A year later, Mets star Carlos Beltrán made a similar prediction during Spring Training for his squad, jesting the Phillies in the process. After a hard fought season, the Mets lost the division series lead in September and would not gain it back. It marked two consecutive years where the Mets were eliminated from playoff contention on the final day of the season.
