North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre History

When North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre opened in 1998 as Coors Amphitheatre, it was the first large-scale outdoor venue of its kind in the San Diego area. Through the years, the 20,500-seat facility in Chula Vista has also been known as Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre, Sleep Train Amphitheatre and Mattress Firm Amphitheatre until North Island Credit Union took over the naming rights in 2018 and brought with it an elevated concertgoing experience.

The first run of shows at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre was star-studded. Stevie Nicks headlined opening night, followed by the Pretenders with the B-52’s, a concert from Elton John and then the venue’s first-ever sold-out show from the Spice Girls. With its large capacity, the amphitheatre has hosted major acts — Ice Cube, Roger Waters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Poison, Dead & Company, Depeche Mode, Demi Lovato, The Cure and more.

A 20-minute drive from downtown San Diego, North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre sits right off I-805. Arrive early, as cars will be shuttling in and out of the vast general parking lot. Once inside, you’ll find food options galore, highlighted by Dog Haus’ craft sausages and loaded tater tots, Fabio Vivani’s Little Italy style bites, Mexican fare from Trejo’s Tacos, and Questlove’s Cheesesteak made with Impossible meat. There are bars inside the venue, and a free fountain drink program for your group’s designated driver.
