Chicago Blackhawks vs. St. Louis Blues Series History

The Chicago Blackhawks-St. Louis Blues rivalry draws from the two clubs’ proximity to one another, longtime divisional competition and deep playoff legacy. After forming in 1967 during the NHL’s expansion era, the Blues posed a new regional threat to the Blackhawks, just 300 miles away, while local fans embraced another platform to wage the bitter sports rivalry between the Midwest cities. In 1970, the Chicago Blackhawks joined St. Louis in the West Division, and both squads have since stuck together through several conference realignments, including the Smythe Division from 1974 to 1993, the pre-2013 Central Division and the league’s current configuration.

Meanwhile, Blackhawks vs. Blues in the postseason became a staple in the ’70s and ’80s with several back-to-back contests. Across 12 Stanley Cup Playoffs matchups, which include their first meeting in 1973 and three consecutive postseason faceoffs from 1988 to 1990, the Blackhawks hold an 8-4 series edge. After nearly a decade, the Chicago-St. Louis hockey rivalry extended into the 2002 postseason with a first round matchup ending in a 4-1 Blues victory. The two clubs played in the first round again during the 2014 and 2016 playoffs, splitting the results between a six-game win for Chicago and seven-game series for St. Louis, respectively.

Although the Midwest rivalry has continued to rage on in the regular season, both teams have raised the Stanley Cup without facing the other on the way. Since St. Louis joined the NHL, the Blackhawks have claimed three championships, in 2010, 2013 and 2015, while the Blues won the franchise’s first title in 2019.

Outside of the postseason, the Chicago Blackhawks-St. Louis Blues rivalry history includes meetings at the NHL Winter Classic. The first took place in 2017 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, with the hometown Blues winning 4-1. For the rematch, the two teams are set to meet for the 2025 NHL Winter Classic in a reversal of hosts at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

The St. Louis Blues compete on home ice at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Opened in 1994, the downtown St. Louis venue was renovated in 2018 to accommodate up to 18,096 fans. In the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals, Enterprise Center presided over Games Three, Four and Six during the Blues’ successful, first title run. Over the years, the hockey arena has hosted the NHL All-Star Game in 2020 and fulfilled two of the city’s three hosting stints for the NCAA Men’s Hockey Frozen Four tournament, in 2007 and 2025.

The Chicago Blackhawks play at United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Replacing the Blackhawks’ longtime home at Chicago Stadium from 1929 to 1994, the Near West Side venue known variously as “The UC,” “The Madhouse on Madison” and “The House That Jordan Built” also serves as home court for the NBA’s Chicago Bulls. In its hockey figuration, United Center holds between 19,717 and 22,428 fans, making it the second-largest arena by capacity in the NHL. Along with Stanley Cup Finals games in 2010, 2013 and 2015, the UC has twice been selected to host the NCAA Men’s Hockey Frozen Four, in 2017 and 2028.
