People Power: Fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins Bring the Passion

The Pittsburgh Penguins first hit the ice in 1967 as one of hockey’s first modern expansion teams and they’ve had a growing, passionate fan base ever since.

Plenty of accomplishments have deepened the love for this squad from the Steel City and beyond.

Four Stanley Cup titles – in 1991, 1992, 2009, and 2016 – and eight division championships have brought Pittsburgh plenty of pride, and the Penguins are giving fans another season to remember.

Fan-tastic festivities

In early 2016, the Penguins home underwent a name change, with team’s base of operations now known as PPG Paints Arena.

With the new name – and the occasion of the team’s 50th anniversary – came another exciting chance to celebrate the Penguins with the team’s first-ever Fan Fest.

Held in early October, the event featured question-and-answer sessions with players, a kids-centric press conference, a drop-in hockey rink, and demonstrations from the team throughout the PPG Paints Arena.

The festivities were a good time for all, from the most enthusiastic fans to the Penguins neophyte.

Visitors to the PPG Paints Arena are in for quite a time. The arena boasts the most comfortable seating arrangement, including the most legroom, in all of pro hockey.

There are also 800 high-definition TVs that keep fans informed, no matter where they are in the building.

Online all the time

A powerful presence on social media is the Penguins forte, especially on Twitter.

The team offers everything from late-breaking news to ticket giveaways that also include the opportunity to take selfies with team stars, like Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury. However, the team’s official app may be their most impressive social networking effort.

A reason to celebrate

On June 12, 2016, the Penguins won their fourth Stanley Cup title.

A few days later, the team held a little get-together in Pittsburgh. Just how many folks showed up? As ESPN reported, over 400,000 people in total!

In some cases, fans waited as many as 12 hours just to cheer on the Penguins’ big win, while others drove the 10-plus hours from as far away as Wisconsin.

What made the parade extra sweet – beyond all the confetti and streamers – was it took place nine years to the day after the Penguins 2009 Stanley Cup parade, which drew an impressive 375,000 fans itself.

By sheer numbers alone, the Penguins not only have the biggest but perhaps the most passionate fans in hockey. And those people are rewarded with great games, new friends, and many memories that will last a lifetime.
