Although all teams belong to the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference, the rivalries are rooted more in their relative proximity to each other. New Jersey Devils vs. New York Rangers Series History

The Devils-Rangers rivalry began in 1982, when the former Colorado Rockies franchise moved to East Rutherford, New Jersey and gave the New York Rangers a new conference rival just over 10 miles away. Within a decade, Devils vs. Rangers became a heated face off in the postseason, as the teams’ first two meetings, in 1992 and 1994, ended in 4-3 series wins for New York. In the latter series, the Rangers went on to claim their fourth Stanley Cup.

Meanwhile, the Devils secured their first championship in the 1995 season, followed by Stanley Cup wins in 2000 and 2003 without another Devils vs. Rangers playoffs rematch. After the Devils moved to Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center in 2007, the first Devils-Rangers postseason series took place in 2008. The teams met again in the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals for what became known as “The Rematch” series, with the dates and win order matching several games from their 1994 faceoff. The Devils advanced to the Stanley Cup final after seven games, then ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Kings. Two seasons later, the Rangers shared a similar fate against the Kings in their most recent Stanley Cup appearance.

The “Battle of the Hudson River” has continued to wage on as the Devils and Rangers met in the first round of the 2023 playoffs. The following season in April 2024, the longtime feud led to an eight-ejection brawl at Madison Square Garden involving all ten players on the ice. Although the Devils-Rangers rivalry has historically resulted in several on-ice scraps, opposing fans have historically shown their team spirit with special cheers directed at the team and players.
