New York Rangers® vs. Philadelphia Flyers® Series History

The “Broad Street vs. Broadway” name comes from the location of both teams’ home ice; the New York Rangers® play in Manhattan, New York, very close to Broadway and the Flyers play on Broad Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The rivalry stems from these two teams being just about 100 miles away from each other, as well as the constant meetups in the regular season and in the Stanley Cup® Playoffs. The Flyers vs. Rangers overall playoff record is 6-5 in favor of the Flyers. Starting in 1974, these two teams played a grueling series, leading to an NHL® playoff record of 406 penalty minutes. The Flyers etched out the Rangers in seven games to begin this historic playoff rivalry. Their playoff battles continued, with the two teams meeting in ’79, ’80, ’82, ’83, ’85, ’86, ’87, ’95, ’97, and 2014. For regular season records, these teams are about as evenly matched as a rivalry can come, with their record at 136-129-37-10 in favor of the Flyers going into the 2022-2023 season.

The Philadelphia and New York rivalry goes beyond the NHL®, with both cities having extreme differences as well as extreme similarities. With a bit of a big-brother, little-brother mentality, these two large metropolitan areas love to compete for their East Coast pride. Along with the Rangers/Flyers rivalry, New York and Philadelphia also maintain the MLB’s Mets/Phillies rivalry, the NFL’s Giants/Eagle rivalry, and the NBA’s Knicks/Sixers rivalry.

The Philadelphia Flyers® have played at the Wells Fargo Center on Broad Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, since 1996. The Flyers have been on Broad Street their entire lifespan, having originally played at the Spectrum on Broad Street from 1967–1996.
