Philadelphia 76ers vs. New York Knicks History

Rivalries rarely run as deep as Philadelphia 76ers vs. New York Knicks does. Reaching all the way back to the NBA’s inaugural season in 1949-50, the then Syracuse Nationals (later Philadelphia 76ers) swept the New York Nets in their first two scheduled games, going on to win the Eastern Championship. In the following 1950-51 season, the Knicks won an even split of their 10 games. Thus, a rivalry was born.

The 76ers and the Knicks have played a staggering total of 468 games in the regular season with the 263-205 win record favoring the 76ers. History and geography bind these two legendary franchises, but it is in the postseason that their rivalry is codified in bad blood.

Through the 1950s, both teams took turns spoiling each other’s championship aspirations in the playoffs. In 1968, the 76ers knocked off the Knicks, four games to two, in the Eastern Division Semifinals. In 1978, the 76ers ousted the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals with a 4-0 sweep. Again in 1983 the 76ers swept the Knicks 4-0 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Most recently the two teams met in the first round of the 1989 Eastern Conference Playoffs in which the Knicks achieved retribution, sweeping the 76ers 3-0.
