Philadelphia 76ers vs. Toronto Raptors History
While the Raptors and 76ers have been playing regular season games against each other since 1995, the rivalry didn’t develop in earnest until the turn of the millennium. In the 2001 NBA Playoffs, the 76ers led by MVP guard Allen Iverson and Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo squared off against Vince Carter and Charles Oakley’s Toronto Raptors.
While Toronto threw the first punch in the series, nabbing game one, Iverson retook the reins in game two, dropping 54 points to even things up. Toronto wouldn’t go down easily though, winning game three at home comfortably behind another 50-burger, this time from Carter. Philadelphia would go on to win the series, taking three out of the next four games, including an 88–87 victory in game seven.
Things would be equally contentious the next time these two historic franchises squared off in the Playoffs, this time in the 2019 Eastern Conference Semifinals. The eventual NBA Champion Raptors, led by two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard and All-Star guard Kyle Lowry would topple future league MVP Joel Embiid and All-NBA guards Jimmy Butler and Ben Simmons from Philadelphia in seven games.
In this series, neither team would win more than two games in a row. Toronto took game one with a 13-point victory before Philly would respond, winning games two and three. After the Raptors responded with two straight wins of their own, they had a chance to close the series out on the road in game six. However, a heroic 25-point and 8-assist performance from Butler — which included holding Leonard in check — powered Philadelphia to victory and on to a game seven. Leonard would eventually dash the 76ers championship aspirations in Scotiabank Arena, scoring 41 points, hauling in 11 rebounds and hitting the series-winning shot from the right baseline as time expired.
