The Flyers vs. Penguins rivalry was not as competitive in the early years, with the Flyers dominating in the ’70s with back-to-back Stanley Cup® Championships from 1974–75. This all changed when Mario Lemieux revitalized the Penguins after he joined the team in 1984. The Flyers and Penguins first met in the 1989 playoffs where the Flyers upset the heavy favorite and Lemieux-backed Penguins in the Divisional Finals. The Penguins would go on to win the 1991 and 1992 Stanley Cup® Finals. Along with the recent playoff matches, the rivalry has continued to burn with memorable moments like a screaming match between Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette and Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato after a late-game hit during a game in the 2011–2012 season, or when beloved Penguins player, Max Talbot, left Pittsburgh to join the Flyers in 2011.
