Home of the Washington Nationals
Catch baseball in the Nation’s Capital at Nationals Park, home of MLB’s Washington Nationals. Located along the Anacostia River, Nats Park stands as the central entertainment complex of the Navy Yard neighborhood, offering unobstructed views of the District, easy access to riverfront attractions like The Yard and most importantly, a ticket to World Series-winning baseball. Below, discover everything you need to know about Nationals Park and feel the Natitude before first pitch.
Nationals Park History
Nationals Park helped re-establish baseball in Washington, D.C. by giving the nascent Nationals, who moved from Montreal in 2005, a ballpark of their own after three seasons at RFK Stadium. The local George Washington University Colonials baseball team played the first game at Nationals Park on March 22, 2008, followed by the Washington Nationals’ home debut during an exhibition against the Baltimore Orioles on March 29 and Opening Day on March 30.
Around the stadium, notable features are nods to the team and city’s baseball legacy, like the Washington DC Sports Hall of Fame in left field, the surrounding Ring of Honor, the split in the upper-deck mirroring the design of the Washington Senators’ previous ballpark Griffith Stadium and statues at the Home Plate Gate honoring Senators players Walter Johnson and Frank Howard and Washington Homestead Grays catcher Josh Gibson of the Negro leagues.
After minor construction projects in 2009, 2011 and 2017, the stadium completed its most extensive renovation effort in 2024. Improvements included a 4,780-square foot jumbotron by Daktronics, stadium-wide updates to ribbon board displays and upgrades to the audio, video and light systems. Though not a design feature, guests won’t be able to miss Nats fans’ longest-running tradition: the Presidents Race, where mascots for presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt race around the field in the middle of the fourth inning.
In 2018, Nationals Park hosted the first MLB All-Star Game in Washington, D.C. since 1969. The following year, the Nats brought the World Series to Washington for Games 3, 4 and 5 en route to their first championship. Outside of baseball, Nats Park put on the 2015 NHL Winter Classic for the neighboring Washington Capitals and has seen concerts by the likes of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Lady Gaga, P!NK, Bad Bunny, Billy Joel and more. Since 2012, the stadium has hosted an 11:00 a.m game on every July 4.
