Step Inside: loanDepot Park – Home of the Miami Marlins

Home of the Miami Marlins

Whether you’re soaking in the Florida sun or cooling in the shade, enjoy a ballgame at the versatile loanDepot Park, home of MLB’s Miami Marlins. Built at the site of the iconic Miami Orange Bowl, loanDepot Park charts a new legacy for the historic grounds in Little Havana. Below, find everything you need to know about loanDepot Park before joining The Fish for a day at the ballpark.

LoanDepot Park History

After landing in Miami in 1993, the then-Florida Marlins quickly established themselves in Major League Baseball with World Series wins in 1997 and 2003. Despite their success, the team shared its home at Joe Robbie Stadium, now-Hard Rock Stadium, with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. In 2009, ground broke on the future loanDepot Park, which would revitalize the site of the Miami Orange Bowl in the Little Havana neighborhood. Opened on March 5, 2012, the stadium went by Marlins Park until receiving its current sponsorship name in 2020.

By design, loanDepot Park offers a modern and innovative game experience. Eschewing the dominant retro ballpark design within the league, loanDepot Park rejects the typical round shape for angular asymmetry, brick-lined walls for white stucco and glass and bright, colorful elements reflecting the stadium’s unique, beachside setting and vibrant art scene. The stadium honors both its storied past, with the Marlins Museum and an artful display of the original Orange Bowl sign on the east plaza, and its colorful present, from a kitschy bobblehead museum to the distinct tiled entrance by kinetic-op artist Carlos Cruz-Diez.

However, the most notable feature of loanDepot Park is the 8,300-ton, retractable steel roof. Used to weather Miami’s high summer heat and rainy, tropical climate, The Roof can open or close within 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the upper outfield wall is fitted with six, 60-foot-high retractable glass panels with clear views of downtown Miami. Since opening, loanDepot Park has undergone two minor renovations, in 2016 and 2020. The stadium is set for another major change, though just outside its walls on the West Plaza, in 2026 with the opening of the outdoor Miami Live! Entertainment complex.

As a baseball venue, loanDepot Park has hosted MLB’s All-Star Game in 2017 and the World Baseball Classic in 2013, 2017, 2023 and coming up again in 2026. Outside of baseball, the stadium has held the Miami Beach Bowl game for college football between 2014 and 2016, the Race of Champions competition in 2017 and Monster Jam events since 2018. Additionally, loanDepot Park is scheduled to host the NHL Winter Classic as the league’s southernmost stadium host ever to be the site of the event. Although not a regular concert venue, the stadium has seen performances by Beyoncé, Guns N’ Roses and P!NK.
