Empower Field at Mile High, the home turf of the NFL’s Denver Broncos, is located in the Sun Valley neighborhood west of downtown Denver and only steps away from Ball Arena, the indoor facility for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and NHL’s Colorado Avalanche.
The open-air venue debuted in 2001 as Invesco Field, and has since undergone several name changes and renovations, including a $100 million upgrade ahead of the 2023–2024 season. Aside from its league-wide altitude advantage, Empower Field at Mile High boasts unique features such as its horseshoe structure and slope-like design evoking the nearby Rocky Mountains, as well as steel floors to preserve the long-held “Mile High Thunder” tradition of fans stomping their feet to create a powerful reverberation effect against opponents.
Empower Field at Mile High has served as the staging ground for several notable Broncos moments, including the stadium’s record-setting crowd of 77,160 at a October 2007 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, the mythic 2012 AFC Divisional playoff game dubbed the “Mile High Miracle” that stands as the fourth-longest game in NFL history and the team’s 2016 playoff win streak leading to their victory at Super Bowl 50. Outside of the NFL, the venue has previously hosted Denver’s Major League Soccer team the Colorado Rapids and the annual Rocky Mountain Showdown college football game between the University of Colorado Buffaloes and the Colorado State University Rams.
As a performance space, Empower Field at Mile High has presented concerts from Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd. In June 2023, Colorado-based DJ Illenium staged the largest EDM concert in Colorado history at his “TRILOGY:COLORADO” tour stop at the Denver venue.

Empower Field at Mile High History
Construction on what is now known as Empower Field began in 1999, and the first event at the $400.7-million stadium took place two years later in 2001. Then known as Invesco Field at Mile High, it became the new home of the Denver Broncos. In 2011, it took on the name Sports Authority Field, and from 2018 to 2019 it was known as Broncos Stadium at Mile High. Colorado-based retirement services provider Empower bought the naming rights to the stadium in 2019.
In addition to Broncos games, the stadium has hosted numerous concerts by top artists including The Weeknd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones and more. It’s also where President Barack Obama gave his acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
A massive, $100 million stadium renovation began in 2023 that includes a 3,000-square-foot expansion, premium hospitality areas, new concession stands, additional elevators to assist ADA guests and more. The stadium got its Mile High nickname because of its elevation one mile above sea level. The high altitude of the stadium, coupled with loud and enthusiastic fans, gives the Broncos one of the best home field advantages in the NFL.
