Are the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors Rivals?

Yes. The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors have a cross-conference rivalry within the National Basketball Association. Because they are in different conferences, they play fewer times per year, but that does not make the head-to-head matchups any less fiery.

Who Are the Cleveland Cavaliers Biggest Rivals?

The Cleveland Cavaliers have a handful of rivals in the NBA, some that naturally develop based on geography and proximity to other teams like the Detroit Pistons, the Chicago Bulls and the Milwaukee Bucks. But the Cavs also have a rivalry with the Golden State Warriors.

Who are the Golden State Warriors Biggest Rivals?

The Golden State Warriors main rivals are their counterparts within the state of California, namely the Sacramento Kings, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers. But the Warriors also have a fierce rivalry with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Golden State Warriors Series History

Because the Cavs are in the Eastern Conference and the Warriors in the Western Conference, these two teams only meet a handful of times each season. However, the Cavs and Warriors have been squaring off since 1970, for a total of 140 meetings over 52 years. The Warriors hold the edge in the all-time series head-to-head, 81-59, and they are in the midst of the longest win streak, 13 straight games dating back to 2017.

The series had classics before 2014, but this rivalry hit its peak between 2015 and 2018 when the Warriors and Cavaliers squared off in four straight NBA Finals. In 2015, the Warriors, led by splash brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, arrived on the big stage when they beat an injury-laden Cavaliers team in six games, despite a super-hero performance by LeBron James who averaged 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds and 8.8 assists.

In the 2016 regular season, the Warriors maintained their status atop the league winning an NBA record 73 games. However, one of their rare losses came at the hands of the Cavs on Christmas Day when Kyrie Irving hit a miraculous turnaround jump shot with 3.3 left to give Cleveland the edge. The Cavs would carry that momentum for the rest of the season and into the playoffs and make history in the process. Cleveland became the first team in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals, winning games five, six and seven and claiming the city’s first championship in decades.

However, Golden State would get their revenge back. That offseason, the Warriors signed future Hall-of-Fame forward Kevin Durant, and won both the 2017 and 2018 Finals, besting the Cavaliers each year, going a combined 30-12 in the playoffs and 8-1 in the Finals over a two year stretch.

Where Do the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors Play?

The Golden State Warriors play at the Chase Center in the heart of downtown San Francisco, California right on the bay. The Chase Center is the newest Arena in the NBA and cost the Warriors and their owner Joe Lacob $1.4 billion. The Chase Center has a capacity of 18,064 fans.

The Cleveland Cavaliers play at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse (formerly named Quicken Loans Arena). The Field House was named after Cavaliers owner’s off-court ventures Rocket Mortgage, and has a capacity of 19,432. Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse plays home court for the Cavs, the American Hockey League Cleveland Monsters and Cleveland State Vikings men’s and women’s basketball.
