Brooklyn Nets vs. New York Knicks Series History

Beyond competing in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference against one another, the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets are crosstown rivals first and foremost, competing for the hearts and support from New Yorkers. The Knicks are a charter member of the NBA, established in 1946, and have been one of the hallmark franchises in the league with several championships.

Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Nets were founded in 1967 in the American Basketball Association (ABA), originally as the New York Nets. They were a dominant force in the ABA, led by Julius “Dr. J” Erving. In 1976, the Nets were one of four teams to be a part of the ABA/NBA merger in 1976. However, they were the only team required by the NBA as part of the terms of the merger to pay an “encroachment fee” to the New York Knicks. In order to afford the tax, the Nets had to sell Dr. J’s contract to the Philadelphia 76ers. Dr. J and the 76ers went on to several championship runs, and thus the rivalries were born.

The two teams have met for a total of 220 times entering the 2023-24 season, with the Nets narrowly leading 112–108. They’ve also met three times in the postseason, each time in the Eastern Conference First Round (1983, 1994 and 2004). The Knicks won the first two meetings in the playoffs, and the Nets swept the most recent matchup.
