Redwood

Idina Menzel returns to Broadway for the first time in nearly a decade in Redwood, a strikingly original musical the Tony winner conceived with director Tina Landau. Inspired by the life of activist Julia Butterfly Hill, Menzel plays Jesse, a New York career woman who ventures to the majestic redwoods of northern California after her life is upended by tragedy. Returning to the theater where she made her Broadway debut in RENT, Menzel’s new musical will begin performances at the Nederlander Theatre on January 24.

In an exclusive interview with Ticketmaster, the Broadway legend teased, “There’s a little theme goin’ on…I’m definitely drawn to characters who get to fly in some sense of the word.”

Death Becomes Her

Want perfection? Take a sip and drink Death Becomes Her all the way down! The wickedly funny Broadway adaptation of the beloved cult classic is a riotous escape starring Megan Hilty as Madeline Ashton, a fading Broadway starlet and Jennifer Simard as Helen Sharp, an aspiring writer and Madeline’s oldest and very best frenemy. Locked in a battle for Christopher Sieber as Dr. Ernest Melville — Helen’s ex-fiancé-turned-Madeline’s husband — the two women stumble upon the promise of immortality in the hands of Michelle Williams’ mysterious Viola Van Horn.

In an exclusive interview with Ticketmaster, the Destiny’s Child member opened up about her devious role, which was inspired by Isabella Rossellini in the original film: “[Am I] a sorcerer? [Am I] a witch?…Viola’s a good saleswoman. She’s an influencer, you know?”

The Great Gatsby

Nearly 100 years after F. Scott Fitzgerald published his literary masterpiece, The Great Gatsby continues its legacy as a Tony-nominated Broadway musical. The Great American Novel may be familiar to generations, but after a century, Gatsby is still pinning all his hopes (and wild parties) on that elusive green light across the bay. Starting January 21, Ryan McCartan is set to take over the role of Jay Gatsby from outgoing star Jeremy Jordan, while Sarah Hyland will star as Daisy Buchanan starting on February 10 (taking over from Eva Noblezada).

The nonbinary playwright and breakout star will don the First Lady’s gown, as well as the delightfully deranged persona they dreamt up for the tragic Mrs. Abraham Lincoln, through January 19. Starting January 21, Emmy winner Betty Gilpin will take over the role for a limited, eight-week engagement through March 16.

Shows Leaving Broadway in January 2025 (Last Call)

Stereophonic

Jump back in the booth for one more recording session at the Golden Theatre before Stereophonic closes January 12. The groundbreaking production — which follows a dysfunctional ‘70s era rock band on the cusp of superstardom as they record what will be their magnum opus — became the most-nominated play in Tony Awards history when it earned 13 nods during the 2024 season, going on to win five including Best Play.

Last summer, composer Will Butler revealed the inspirations for the play’s rock-fueled soundtrack, telling Ticketmaster, “I instantly recognize [Fleetwood Mac] as a touchpoint, but…there’s like a lot of the making of [Bruce Springsteen’s] Born to Run in there. There’s a lot of the D. A. Pennebaker’s Company documentary. There’s a lot of touchstones there.”
