713 Music Hall History

713 Music Hall is housed in the east wing of the United States Postal Service (USPS)’s former headquarters in Houston. Situated next to Houston’s Grand Central Station, the building was erected in 1934 as a train depot. In 1959, the facility became the USPS headquarters. The mid-1980s brought on a historic name change to the building. In honor of the first female Black congresswoman from the Southern United States, the building was named the Barbara Jordan Post Office.

The venue is a striking architectural feat, originally designed by the same firm that built Houston’s iconic Astrodome. With early renovations occurring during the Cold War, the building boasts unique features that are history lessons: nuclear bomb shelters, spy tunnels and lookout galleries.

After closing its doors as a post office, the building received a third life as the 713 Music Hall in 2021. Since its opening as a music venue, 713 Music Hall has seen some of music’s most renowned acts, including Rosalia, Lil Nas X, Khruangbin and many more.
