Wicked (Original Broadway Cast Recording) Overview
There’s nothing that can stop these witches from being popu…lar. Wicked opened on Broadway in October 2003 at New York City’s Gershwin Theatre. Conceived by composer Stephen Schwartz with a book by Winnie Holzman, the musical serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
Based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, when they meet as roommates — and eventually become unlikely friends — while at Shiz university. A magical opportunity to meet the wonderful Wizard of Oz sends the two witches onto two wildly disparate paths of wickedness and goodness before Dorothy inevitably drops into Oz.
Wicked’s original Broadway cast recording was released on December 16, 2003, featuring OBCs Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. The album includes beloved songs from the musical like “The Wizard and I,” “What Is This Feeling?”, “Popular,” “Defying Gravity” and “For Good.”
Notably, the album does not include the number “The Wicked Witch of the East” from Act II, Scene 2. Composer Stephen Schwartz wanted to avoid spoiling the show for audiences who hadn’t seen it, and the song is dialogue- and plot point-heavy.
On November 22, 2024, Wicked: Part 1 — the first half of the musical’s long-awaited film adaptation — will finally make its way to silver screens across the country, starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, with Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Peter Dinklage as Dr. Dillamond and more.

Lyrics to Wicked’s Most Famous Songs
“Did that really just happen?/ Have I actually understood?/ This weird quirk I’ve tried to suppress or hide/ Is a talent that could help me meet the Wizard/ If I make good/ So I’ll make good” – Elphaba in “The Wizard And I”
“What is this feeling so sudden and new?/ I felt the moment I laid eyes on you/ My pulse is rushing, my head is reeling/ My face is flushing, what is this feeling?/ Fervid as a flame/ Does it have a name? Yes!/ Loathing, unadulterated loathing” – Glinda and Elphaba in “What Is This Feeling?”
“Dancing through life down at the Ozdust/ If only because dust is what we come to/ Nothing matters, but knowing nothing matters/ It’s just life/ So keep dancing through” – Fiyero in “Dancing Through Life”
“Popular/ I know about popular/ And with an assist from me to be who you’ll be/ Instead of dreary who-you-were, well, are/ There’s nothing that can stop you from becoming popu-ler…lar” – Glinda in “Popular”
“I’m through accepting limits/ ‘Cause someone says they’re so/ Some things I cannot change/ But till I try, I’ll never know” – Elphaba in “Defying Gravity”
“And if you care to find me/ Look to the western sky/ As someone told me lately/ Everyone deserves a chance to fly/ And if I’m flying solo, at least I’m flying free/ To those who ground me, take a message back from me/ Tell them how I am defying gravity/ I’m flying high, defying gravity/ And soon I’ll match them in renown/ And nobody in all of Oz/ No Wizard that there is or was/ Is ever gonna bring me down.” – Elphaba in “Defying Gravity”
“Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” – Elphaba and Glinda in “For Good”
