Red Hat Amphitheater History
Red Hat Amphitheater opened in 2010 as the Raleigh Amphitheater, adding a landing spot for the already pedestrian-friendly downtown area next to the Raleigh Convention Center. Owned and operated by the City of Raleigh and named after the hometown software company Red Hat, which purchased the naming rights in 2012, the city-centered venue is truly a product of its surroundings with rows of lush green trees lining the edges of the immediate urban backdrop.
Over the years, Red Hat Amphitheater has grown from a temporary performance space to become a major focal point of downtown Raleigh. However, the venue will undergo its first major change beginning in Fall 2024, when it is set to move one block south as a means to expand the neighboring Raleigh Convention Center. The shift has been projected to raise the current 6,000 seating capacity by approximately 500 to 1,000, with sights to reopen before the 2026 concert season.
The outdoor venue has embraced its warm, summer vibes with an equally inviting artist slate that has featured classic rock acts such as Steve Miller Band and Bryan Adams, country artist Tyler Childers, singer-songwriter Maren Morris, rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Nas and jam bands Phish, Widespread Panic, Umphrey’s McGee and Goose. The amphitheater also hosts the IBMA World of Bluegrass festival and Hopscotch Music Festival as well as the annual Amped Up Music Series to promote local bands and artists. Dave Matthews Band crossed over from their home state of Virginia to open the spot on June 4, 2010.
