Having served as the home of the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Cowboys since 1919, Boone Pickens Stadium has welcomed visitors far and wide to witness the Cowboys legendary plays. Continue reading below to learn more about the true home on the range that is Boone Pickens Stadium.

Boone Pickens Stadium History

Boone Pickens Stadium, located in Stillwater, Oklahoma, is the oldest football stadium in the Big 12. While the field was originally named Lewis Field after Lowery Laymon Lewis, a former dean of veterinary medicine and science and literature at OSU, the school constructed the structure that would become the stadium that fans know and love in 1919. The stadium was officially renamed Boone Pickens Stadium during a halftime ceremony at the football game versus the University of Wyoming in 2003, honoring OSU alumnus T. Boone Pickens, a Texas oilman and entrepreneur who founded Mesa Petroleum Company in 1956. Pickens donated $165,000,000 to the university, which is to date the largest single donation to any higher education institution in American history.

With over 100 years of games under its belt, the Boone Pickens Stadium has given several generations of Cowboy fans unforgettable memories. Visitors and OSU students alike join the team before each game on “The Walk,” escorting the players from the Student Union building to the stadium with classic gameday spirit. At the “Fan Fest,” which opens about three hours before kickoff, fans can interact with the OSU athletics programs, get autographs from their OSU players, watch the OSU spirit squad and take pictures with the school’s mascot, Pistol Pete. Of course, any game day would be remiss without the Spirit Rider run that occurs every touchdown. The university’s iconic statue appears to come to life at this momentous moment in the game, as a skilled rider mounts the horse Bullet and races to the 30-yard-line, followed by the enthusiastic hoots and hollers of the crowd.

While it principally functions as a sports venue, the stadium has also hosted various musical acts in the past, including Ben Folds in 2003, the Barenaked Ladies in 2003 and Jason Mraz in 2005.
