Amon G. Carter Stadium History

Named after Amon G. Carter, a prominent Fort Worth businessman, newspaper publisher and city booster, Amon G. Carter Stadium serves as a memorial of all of his great achievements and generous contributions to TCU and the city of Fort Worth. Locals refer to the stadium as “The Carter” and “Hell’s Half Acre,” with the latter being a reference to Fort Worth’s history as part of the Wild West.

The stadium opened on Oct. 11, 1930 when TCU defeated the University of Arkansas, 40-0. Under the leadership of head coach Dutch Meyer, the Horned Frogs won national championships in 1935 and 1938.

In 2003, the stadium’s playing surface was named W.A. “Monty & Tex” Moncrief Field, frequently shortened to Moncrief Field, after W. A. “Tex” Moncrief Jr. and his father W. A. “Monty” Moncrief Sr. The stadium will host the 2024 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, which will feature one team from the American Athletic Conference and one team from Conference USA.
