Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording) Overview

The world’s gonna know his name — and his songs — for the rest of time. Hamilton: An American Musical premiered Off-Broadway in January 2015 at the Public Theatre in New York City. Just six months later, the biographical musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda opened on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, with previews starting July 13, 2015. The rest is instant (American) history.

Telling the story of the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton follows the Founding Father through his arrival as an orphan in New York City, the American Revolution, the formation of the United States of America, the writing of the Constitution, his role as Secretary of the Treasury and the presidencies of George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, as well as major milestones in Hamilton’s personal life.

Hamilton’s original Broadway cast recording was released on September 25, 2015, and allows listeners to experience the vast bulk of the show — given its operatic approach to unfurling the plot using hip-hop, rap, R&B, pop and soul music as well as traditional musical theater show tunes.

The musical ultimately won 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and in 2020, a filmed version featuring the original Broadway cast was released on Disney+ just in time for the Fourth of July.
