The Met Presented by Highmark History

The Met Presented by Highmark was built as Philadelphia’s grand opera house in 1908 by Oscar Hammerstein and opened with a production of George Bizet’s Carmen. Two years after opening, Hammerstein’s son exercised his father’s power of attorney and sold the building to the New York Metropolitan Opera, with the company’s tenure lasting through 1920. In the mid-20th century, the theater was known for putting on vaudeville and theater acts, as well as hosting touring acts like James Cleveland, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Mahalia Jackson, The Caravans and more.

In its more than 100-year history, The Met Presented by Highmark has lived many lives, including as a silent movie theater, ballroom, vocational school for mechanics, a sporting venue dedicated to basketball, wrestling and boxing, a gospel concert hall and the headquarters of the Church of the Holy Ghost. Following a $45 million renovation, the venue reopened as a mixed use concert venue in 2018, beginning with a concert by Bob Dylan.
