Oriole Park At Camden Yards History

When the Orioles played at Memorial Stadium, it was one of many stadiums used by a Major League Baseball team throughout the 1950s to 1980s that housed multiple sports franchises. Once the Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984, talks about moving the Orioles to a different stadium began. Architectural firm HOK Sport was hired and, after working with Baltimore-based firm Ashton Design, a retro ballpark with modern amenities style was signed off on. This began a movement across the league, as many current stadiums are modeled after this ballpark style.

Camden Yards opened in 1992 and hosted the MLB All-Star Game in 1993. On September 6, 1995, the stadium was the site of one of the most famous feats in MLB history, as Cal Ripken Jr. broke Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games played streak with his 2,131st consecutive game played. Exactly one year later, Eddie Murray hit his 500th home run at the park.

The stadium underwent renovations in 2008 and 2012, when new video boards were installed, concourses were widened, food concessions were expanded, party suites were added, and more. The team has added elements to the stadium that highlight Baltimore’s history, such as the replica of the B&O Railway Warehouse canopy. The left field fences were moved back in 2022.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards has also been home to other exciting events, such as the Birdland Music Summer Series, where concerts took place after home games. Brett Young, DJ Diesel (Shaquille O’Neal), and Andy Grammer performed in 2023, while Billy Joel held the first concert at the stadium back in 2019. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is slated to play a show at the stadium in September 2024. Pope John Paul II celebrated mass at Camden Yards in 1995.
