Live Event Spotlight: Coachella Music Festival

Coachella

Since the inaugural event in 1999, the Coachella Music and Arts Festival has become beloved amongst music fans. A true trailblazer, Coachella booked Rage Against the Machine, The Chemical Brothers, Morrissey, Tool, Beck, Gil Scott Heron, DJ Shadow, Tool and more in its first year. This was in 1999, heavy!

After a hiatus in 2000, Coachella has been consistently running since 2001. In 2014, 15 years since fans first flooded the festival grounds in Indio, California, Coachella enjoys an impressive, worldwide reputation. Live events now have a new category; music festivals. Music festivals of all sizes, on every continent, focus on every genre of music and often include other live performances, such as comedy, dance, and more. Festivals like Coachella provide a truly unique arena to enjoy the art of live music and we simply love them.

Ticketmaster prides itself on its employees being true fans of live events, especially music festivals. We sat down with two Ticketmaster employees and asked them to share some acts performing at Coachella in 2014 they are stoked to see. The list includes the likes of, Beck, Calvin Harris, Disclosure, Cajmere, Nas and many more. Check it out!

Richard M’s Picks for Coachella 2014

  1. Zedd
Back in 2012, I saw Zedd on his back-to-back tour with Porter Robinson. It was my first time seeing him live and the show was mesmerizing. Zedd’s style is very electro-pop based and he just has this ability to keep the crowd dancing constantly. What I like about Zedd is how skilled he is at blending pop music with electronic dance music through his remixes. Over the last year or two, these two genres have become very popular in the Top 40 world. After the success of his major hit, “Clarity”, Zedd’s career has only grown. His set at Coachella will definitely be one not to miss.
  2. Dillon Francis
This Los Angeles native is one of my absolute favorite producers in the EDM world for many reasons. Dillon’s sets are always so much fun to be a part of. He’s very interactive with his audience and doesn’t take himself too seriously. I’ve been to festivals before where the artist will walk onto the stage, play their set, and walk off without saying a single word. Dillon is definitely the opposite. Everything from his stage set up, obsession with cats and tacos, and emojis that are incorporated into his visual effects make him one of the most fun DJs to check out.
  3. Frank Turner
Frank Turner is on the opposite side of the spectrum in terms of styles I usually enjoy. Formerly the vocalist for the band, Million Dead, I discovered Frank through a track called “Recovery” off of his solo album, Tape Deck Heart. This English singer-songwriter branched off into a more acoustic vibe with his latest album. His candor and vulnerability on this album is what lead me to like his music. It’s very honest and relatable. I have yet to see him live, but I know without a doubt, his Coachella set will be a good one.
  4. Disclosure
I’ve always been a fan of deep house music and when I first discovered this duo, I was hooked. Disclosure is made up of two brothers, Guy and Howard and although they are fairly new on the scene, they are starting to make a name for themselves. Their latest hit, “Latch” just made its way stateside, but was released in 2012 in the UK. The track features vocals from Sam Smith and has become very popular for its mellow vibe; perfect for chilling out to. With over 30 million views on YouTube, these guys are one to definitely keep an eye on as they continue to grow and release new music.
  5. Calvin Harris
Calvin Harris is easily one of the most recognizable artists today whether you’re into Electronic Dance Music or Top 40. He’s had tremendous success working with artists such as Rihanna with her hit, “We Found Love.” It won Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2012, and since then his music career has just skyrocketed. I first saw Calvin back in 2012 at a small venue in Orange County and it was around the time his single “Bounce” released and he destroyed his set. It was phenomenally entertaining. He consistently keeps the crowd on their toes by mashing up hit songs and bringing great dance tracks that everyone can enjoy and dance to. His set at Coachella will certainly be one not to miss.

Jon R’s Picks for Coachella 2014

  1. Beck
Beck played the inaugural Coachella event back in 1999 and hasn’t played the festival since. That’s 15 years! Fifteen years and Beck is still living in the studio cranking out amazing music for his fans. His latest album, Morning Phase, was released February 21 and has been number 3 on the Billboard Top 200 charts since it dropped.
  2. Nas
Nasty Nas, Nasir Jones, Nastradamus: a true hip-hop pioneer and a unanimous pick on everyone’s Best Hip-Hop MC’s of All Time list. Nas’ first LP, Illmatic, is regarded as one of the best albums in the history of hip-hop. It ain’t hard to tell that Nas is a must see for any music fan.
  3. The Knife
Remember the 2006 track “Heartbeats”: a tune which Rolling Stone had at number 87 on their top 100 songs of the 2000s? Well, the sibling duo from Sweden heads to Coachella in 2014. Their latest album, released in April 2013, received an 8.4 out of 10 from Pitchfork.com. Revisit “Heartbeats” below and don’t miss them at Coachella.
  4. Cajmere
Cajmere (also known as Green Velvet, Geo Vogt, Green Velvet, Half Pint, Curan Stone, and Gino Vittori) is a staple in house and electronic music. He is your favorite DJ’s favorite DJ, and your favorite producer’s favorite producer. He released his first house music track back in 1991 and is still making some of the highest quality house music today: never compromised and always progressed. If you don’t know Cajmere, get familiar this year at Coachella and check out a live set from his soundcloud page below.
  5. Pharrell Williams
Pharrell has been nominated for over 30 different awards in music since 2003. There is nobody more synonymous with hit singles and heavy hitting albums than the legend that is Pharrell Williams. From “Get Luck” with Draft Punk to “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke, the dude just knows what’s up.
